“And it came to pass in those days, that

there went out a decree from Caesar

Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when

Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)  And all

went to be taxed, every one into his own

city.  And Joseph also went up from Galilee,

out of the city of Nazareth, into

Judaea , unto the city of David, which is

called Bethlehem; (because he was of the

house and lineage of David:) to be taxed

with Mary his espoused wife, being great

with child.  And so it was, that, while they

were there, the days were accomplished

that she should be delivered.”

WDC stewardship suggestion:   Congress has passed the IRA Charitable rollover for 2008 and 2009.  Withdrawals from your IRA are normally subject to being taxed.  However, for those over 70 1/2 a direct gift from an IRA to a charitable organization (like your local congregation or Western District Conference) eliminates the tax, even if you have already maxed out on your charitable deduction for the year.  The gift is not counted as income; however, you do not receive a tax deduction for the gift either.  Ask your IRA custodian or financial adviser for more information on this giving opportunity.

Camp Mennoscah —Did you adopt a room?  The rooms in the Retreat Center were “adopted” by people and we can no longer find the complete list of adoptees.  We know that sometimes the comforters/blankets and other items are switched in the rooms, and we want to replace items to their proper place when this happens.  Please contact Camp Mennoscah at 620-297-3290 or campmnomennowdc.org if you adopted a room.

Susan Gaeddert, Madison, Wis., and Bethel College Professor of Music Karen Bauman Schlabaugh will play a recital of piano pieces for four hands Sunday, Nov. 16, 3 p.m., in the Ad. Building chapel on the Bethel campus; free and open to the public. The program comprises pieces by Beethoven, Ravel, Brahms, Bizet and Townsend.

Would everyone  please check your picture directory roster in the back of the book to make sure you have a complete roster?  Some books were printed with names and adddresses from A to L listed twice instead of printing the full alphabet.

If you have one of these, please leave it in the church office along with your name and we will replace it for you.  Olan Mills asked us to send in the incorrect books and they will put in the correct pages.

Hesston-Bethel Performing Arts will present The Lieurance Woodwind Quintet in concert at Hesston Mennonite Church on Sunday, November 23 at 3 p.m.  Residency at Bethel College's Krehbiel Auditorium on Monday, November 24, including an 11 am convocation and a 12 pm free public master class.  Tickets $14-$17, with discounts for seniors and students. Free child care is available to patrons who request the service in advance. Call 620-327-8158 or 316-284-5205 to order tickets or 620-327-8158 to request child care.

The West Zion Concert Series continues with a fall concert on Sunday evening, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at West Zion Mennonite Church, 101 S Washington, Moundridge, KS.  Featured performers will be Christopher Shaw, playing the tracker organ; Kenna Graber, flute; Open Road, an a capella men's vocal ensemble; and Donna Stucky, piano.   During the concert, a freewill offering will be received to offset the costs of the concert.  Refreshments will be served.  There will be opportunity to purchase CDs of some of the performers.

Religion

1 .  Open Mind Open Heart The Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel by Thomas Keating

First published in 1986 and in print--and immensely popular--ever since, Open Mind, Open Heart, by the Trappist Monk Thomas Keating, remains one of the best introductions to a specifically Christian form of meditation.   Father Keating gives the reader an overview of what contemplative prayer both is and isn't; he discusses the history of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition and then explores step by step the process of Centering Prayer, briefly exploring its origins in the ancient church and then demonstrating its use as "a sign of one's intention" to surrender to God. Each chapter concludes with questions and answers that provide useful information in an informal context.

2. Forgiveness A Legacy of the West Nickel Mines Amish School by John L. Ruth

This is a thoughtful and sensitive meditation on the events that shocked the community and the world when a gunman killed himself, five school children, and wounded five others in the Amish community of Nickel Mines, Lancaster County, Pa. Many were stunned when in the midst of their grieving the Amish community offered words of forgiveness toward the dead killer and his family. The author reflects on the legacy of forgiveness offered on that heartbreaking day.

3. Road Signs for the Journey A Profile of Mennonite Church USA by Conrad L. Kanagy

With data from a 2006 survey of Mennonite Church members, Conrad L. Kanagy provides spiritual and sociological markers of the church today. He notes changes since surveys of Mennonites in 1972 and 1989, and compares the denomination with other U.S. faith traditions.

Adult Fiction

1 .  Sunset by Karen Kingsbury

As John Baxter makes plans to marry Elaine, one of the Baxters enters into the most trying season of all. During a time of renewed love and hope for the future, the Baxters try to come together to establish the sacred ground of marriage and to chart a course for the

future. Memories of times gone by meet with the changes of today in a story that proves only the support of faith and family can take a person into the sunset years of life.

Children's’ Fiction

1. Oh Harry by Mark Gibbel

This heartwarming tale of a busy family and their determined kitten will strike a chord with pet lovers young and old.

2. Pete & Pillar the big rain by Jeffery Stoddard

Pete (a mighty diesel truck) and Pillar (a bulldozer) were best friends...which may seem odd, because everybody knows haulers don't talk to diggers. But they didn't care what others thought. They were best friends anyway. As they worked side by side their friendship grew until one day it was tested in a big way. When a major thunderstorm threatens to flood the village Pete and Pillar realize something must be done--and fast! While Pillar is busily scooping boulders onto the bank to stop the flow of water, he looks up and finds Pete missing. Wondering how his friend could leave him at such a critical time, Pillar follows Pete's muddy tracks in order to find him. He finally finds Pete, and Pete needs help! Now it was up to Pillar to save his best friend. Could he do it? Ages 6-10

3. Four Feet, Two Sandals by Karen Lynn Williams & Khadra Mohammed

When relief workers bring used clothing to the refugee camp, everyone scrambles to grab whatever they can. Ten-year-old Lina is thrilled when she finds a sandal that fits her foot perfectly, until she sees that another girl has the matching shoe. But soon Lina and Feroza meet and decide that it is better to share the sandals than for each to wear only one.  As the girls go about their routines--washing clothes in the river, waiting in long lines for water, and watching for their names to appear on the list to go to America--the sandals remind them that friendship is what is most important.

Four Feet, Two Sandals was inspired by a refugee girl who asked the authors why there were no books about children like her. With warm colors and sensitive brush strokes, this book portrays the strength, courage, and hope of refugees around the world, whose daily existence is marked by uncertainty and fear. Recommended for ages 7 to 10.

DIGITAL DISCIPLESHIP:

Forming Faith in an Electronic Culture

November 7-9, 2008   -  Hesston College, Hesston, KS

But why this conference?    If it’s true that people perceive reality differently because of the electronic culture we live in, then it’s also true that people need a new way of doing church.    It’s about figuring out how we view reality differently and affirming together that Jesus can work in any culture . . .  and strategizing how we do church—faithfully.
